NHS MIDWIFE

Commissioned by the NHS as a follow-up to the award-winning MATERNITY project,
MIDWIFE received international media coverage across The Times, BBC News and BBC London.

Yuma Studios founder James Clifford Kent was embedded within the maternity unit at West Middlesex University Hospital, working closely with midwives and clinical staff to document the realities of modern maternity care. With access across antenatal clinics, the labour ward, birth centre and postnatal ward, he captured the human stories behind the service — balancing moments of joy, vulnerability and resilience with the pressures faced by frontline healthcare teams.

Working within a live clinical environment required sensitivity, trust and the ability to respond instinctively to unpredictable situations. Through a documentary-led approach, James produced a body of imagery that highlighted both the humanity of maternity care and the dedication of the professionals delivering it, helping to support wider engagement with the project and its national conversation around maternity services.
