NHS MATERNITY

Commissioned by The Lancet, Yuma Studios documented compassionate care and leadership within NHS maternity services, creating a body of work that explored the human relationships at the heart of maternity care.

Working closely with clinicians, midwives and maternity teams, James embedded himself within NHS settings to capture authentic moments of connection, trust and care. The work was developed for use across multiple platforms, combining editorial storytelling with a wider public engagement strategy designed to highlight examples of compassionate leadership and compassionate care across the service.

The resulting imagery reached audiences through international media coverage, including The Times and BBC News, as well as a public exhibition that attracted more than 30,000 visitors. The work generated over one million online engagements and was subsequently recognised by the British Journal of Photography, being selected for both Portrait of Britain and Portrait of Humanity (2024–25).
